Early Auditions for the 2012-13 Season

EARLY AUDITIONS: May 30th

We know it is the last day of school for AISD but what better way to celebrate this year!

The ACT 2012/13 Season currently includes (these shows are subject to change):

Peter Pan, Guys and Dolls, Grease, Suessical, and FAME.

ACT will be holding auditions for the next season of shows. All students planning to participate in a production with ACT in 2012/13 must audition to be placed in a production.

Incentives to audition in May include an early registration discount, an extra three months for the payment plan, early placement AND knowing your production schedule in extreme advance. If you simply can not make the May date, do not fret, ACT will hold another round of auditions in August.

For the Auditions: Please prepare a monologue of your choice (approximately 90 seconds or less), in addition to a 32-bar (or one minute) cut from a musical theatre song of any era or style. You will also participate in a group dance audition, so please dress accordingly. Those interested in the Children’s Theater only, must audition too BUT we will modify audition requirements as needed.

Auditions will be scheduled every hour from 4-8 at the VORTEX, located at 2307 Manor Rd.

Shades of Gray

April 13 – 22

As far a private detectives go, it doesn’t get much better than Gray. He has seen it all, done it all and solved it all. Now he finds himself in the middle of a pretty tough case, one that at times seems impossible even for him. He is forced to dig deeper and look harder than he ever has before. Join the musical mystery-solving adventure, as Gray gathers clues and discovers truths about the world and himself, realizing that things really aren’t always as they seem. Done in the style of classic noir, Shades of Gray is a youth-friendly spin on the old-timey detective stories. Full of fast-talkers, false leads and femme fatales, this sharp and stylized show will keep everyone guessing until the end.

Performed by ACT’s Level 2 Musical Theater Students.

Power Up1: Mayhem in Metroville

April 21st – 29th

This April, the students of Austin Children’s Theater will suit up and save the world! Ten years ago there was a Big Battle in Metroville. The evil villains were destroyed. The heroes lost their powers. And the citizens celebrated ten years of peace. Now, a decade later, a new generation of villains and heroes have decided to power up and take the place of their parents. Join them on a musical journey, as they discover what it really means to be powerful. Full of action, adventure, humor and rock-n-roll, this show is sure to entertain all ages!

Performed by the Level 1 students of ACT.

Sing, dance, and act as a chorus member in this FULL-SCALE professionally produced original musical! The performers in this rock musical will be accompanied by a live band, and have the opportunity to work with many fabulous local artists. Custom script by Erin Fleming, music and lyrics by Tyler Mabry, lights by Jason Amato, sets by Anne-Marie Gordon and Tina Gramman, and costumes by Talena Martinez. A Super Fly Week of Camp!

ACT teamed up with Sky Candy and we were in full swing- literally- during Spring Break camp at the Vortex. The campers dabbled in the art of aerial dance, learning how to do awesome tricks in the beautiful red and white silks, their eyes lighting up like kids in a (sky) candy store. (The adults may have dabbled a bit, too.) For their Friday performance, the campers acted out three well-known fairy tales, using the silks to help tell the stories, and of course, to help show off their new skills. The show, called Airy Tales, had parents cracking up in their seats, and left them very impressed with their little “actor-bats”. It was an all-around super fly week of camp!

Aerial Theater Spring Break Camp

March 12-16

This spring break camp will have you Defying Gravity. Play theater games, create stories, sing, dance, act, and to top it all off, learn how to fly! There is something for everyone as you spend the week picking up theater skills on and off the ground. Soar into the wonderful world of aerial arts while experiencing the magic of theater. Learn to do tricks in the air, using silks, ropes and hoops with the help of Austin’s wildly popular aerial arts group, Sky Candy. On Friday, show off your new-found skills in your very own variety show!

Session 1:

Time: 9am – 3pm
Friday Show at 1pm (a lunch time special*)
Ages: 6-10
Tuition: $225
Maximum Students: 30 (two classes of 15)
*Camp is over after the show, if additional care is needed, please call in advance and we can work something out!

Session 2:

Monday through Thursday ONLY

12-week Vocal Technique Class

To perform at your best in musical theatre requires knowledge of unique vocal techniques. Students in this class will learn about how the voice works together with their bodies to produce exciting, healthy sounds while singing onstage. We’ll explore topics like range, resonance, placement, and alignment through fun, energetic exercises that will have you on your feet as early as day one. Join us to learn more about special techniques for singing in musicals, and practice your newfound skills as we go along!

8-week Triple Threat and Audition Technique Training Class

This class is designed to help develop your technique and skill in musical theater training while also preparing you for any musical theater audition. You will take classes in each of the three areas of musical theater: dance, acting and voice. The last class will be a mock audition for a panel of directors, choreographers and music directors. At the end of the last class, a talk-back session with the panel of auditioners will take place.

This January the advanced students of the Austin Conservatory of Theater face their fears, foes and futures in the first-ever fully staged production of Standardized Testing – The Musical!!!! New York writer Sam Willmott is the brainiac behind this hilarious and touching story of eight compulsive teenagers who, in the course of a standardized test, create and destroy friendships, learn to express their individuality, and sing and dance like maniacs. Adam Roberts directs.

Says Willmott, “I couldn’t be more thrilled for ACT to present the premiere production of my show. Adam’s galvanizing directorial insights and the unbridled enthusiasm of the cast are going to make this a truly not-to-be-missed production!”

(BTW, this test is totes rated PG-13 :).

Testing will take place at the Baker Center in Hyde Park, 3908 Avenue B.

Adam Overett teams with local musical theater talent and high school students in world-premiere cabaret showcase benefiting Austin’s young artists.

On December 17 and 18, Austin Conservatory of Theater (ACT) and award-winning Broadway artist Adam Overett will team up to present the world-premier cabaret My Life is a Musical: The Songs of Adam Overett. Directed by Adam Roberts, the performance showcases 15 of Overett’s original songs, serving up a rambunctious romp through the life and mind of an NYC writer-performer.

Advanced students from ACT will perform alongside Overett and local musical theatre artists Eve Alonzo, Joseph Banks, Libby Dees, Trevor Detling, Eric Ferguson and Lucy Jennings. All proceeds benefit the ACT Children’s Theater and Conservatory Scholarship Fund, which supports Austin’s youth in creating, exploring and producing all aspects of art.

The event performs twice only at The VORTEX on 2307 Manor Road:
