The Conservatory of Theater… A year in review

The Conservatory of Theater, dedicated to building the next generation of theater professionals, offers intensive training in acting, voice, dance and the business of theater to passionate, dedicated advanced students who are on a track to pursue a degree or profession in theater performance. Students in grades 6-12 are provided pre-professional training in musical theatre from September through April. Advanced students receive nine hours of training each week in ballet, musical theatre dance, voice, acting, and musical theatre history. Intermediate students receive five hours of training in voice, musical theatre dance, ballet, and acting. All students receive an hour of “specialty” instruction each week, during which students explore topics not encountered in their technique classes, with occasional visits from guest artists. All classes are taught by extensively experienced musical theatre professionals who possess a passion for both educating and mentoring musical theatre students.

During the inaugural 2011-12 season, the advanced conservatory premiered Sam Wilmott’s acclaimed Standardized Testing… the Musical!!!!; this was the first-ever production of NYC writer Wilmott’s piece. Our advanced students also performed under the direction of Broadway performer Adam Overett in “Pope!,” a number written for his new musical. Our intermediate conservatory students presented a lavish production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, chalk full of designs from a handful of the best professionals in Austin. Not only do our conservatory students have the opportunity to perform in some of the region’s most professionally-executed musicals for young pre-professionals, they also receive intense, focused training to prepare them for college auditions and/or continued professional training post-high school.
