Austin Children's Theater

Broadway meets Austin

For Release

NY meets Austin: This Summer, Austin Children’s Theater brings Making it on Broadway to Austin.

Austin Children’s Theater is bringing Broadway to Austin. Launched in New York City, Making it on Broadway is a week long intensive camp that focuses on acting, voice, song selection, and audition techniques, all taught by Broadway veterans. Austin will be 1 of 5 cities currently offering this camp in the nation, and currently the only one in the region.

Only 40 students will be accepted. Open auditions for the camp will be held on June 2, 2-8pm, location TBD, ages 13-18. The week-long camp is on July 21-26. Students whom wish to audition must come prepared to sing with sheet music for 15-32 bars of one up-beat song, and one ballad (songs from musicals recommended but not required). Call 512-927-6633 to schedule an appointment.

This rigorous adventure through the world of musical theater involves an intense week of training focusing on how to audition, building a song repertoire, musical theater choreography and more. Finalizing the camp, the forty lucky students selected will have an opportunity to use their training in an actual casting audition. Telsey & Compay, famous casting agency, will come and hold private auditions with each student with the possibility of being cast in a future role. Telsey & Company is well known for casting for Broadway and National Touring, with shows such as Wicked, Hairspray, Rent, Disney’s High School Musical, and Grey Gardens.

ACT will host Broadway stars like Jodie Langel, Jose Llana, and Sheri Sanders. Langel has starred in Broadway’s Les Miserables and CATS, to name a few. She was awarded “Best National Anthem Singer of 2007” by the Mets, and is the author of the best selling book Making it on Broadway. Jose Llana, long time faculty member and teacher, has been on the Broadway scene since 1996, with the King and I and since, has starred in Pulitzer prized Rent, and most recently, award winning The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. In the spring of 2007, Jose proudly became a founding member of Asian Americans on Broadway, an organization that presents concert events across the country starring some of Broadway’s most prominent Asian American actors. Sheri Sanders is best known for both her portrayal of Kitty Genovese in the Screams of Kitty Genovese, and her comic turn as Little Becky Two Shoes in the National Tour of Urinetown.

Austin Children’s Theater will also continue running their regular Summer Camps this summer for ten weeks, starting June 9th, 8-5pm. Camps will be held in Hyde Park at the Sri Atmananda Memorial School, located at 4100 Red River St., Austin, TX, 78751. Summer Camps are broken into two categories—two-week teen intensives and one-week summer camps. Enroll online or call 512-927-6633.
